Customer Case Van Schie

Van Schie CV optimizes the lighting strategy for potted lilies together with Ledgnd, resulting in more efficient and sustainable cultivation.

Ledgnd helps Van Schie optimize the LED lighting strategy for potted lilies.

Van Schie, with over 35 years of experience in growing potted lilies, was looking for ways to improve cultivation. Ledgnd offered a comprehensive solution for the purchase, integration, and optimization of LED lighting in the greenhouse. By using smart wireless sensors and control mechanisms, they have set up an advanced system to monitor and regulate the microclimate.

15% shorter cultivation time

15% shorter cultivation time by extending the day by 1 hour

Intense leaf color

Lilies grown under LED lighting had greener leaves

Larger flower buds

The lilies produced larger flower buds of higher quality

Stronger flower

Lilies grown under LED were stronger compared to Son-T

Challenge

Scientific research has shown that lilies can be grown entirely with LED lighting. However, implementing this knowledge in the greenhouse is not as simple as it seems. Van Schie faced the challenge of creating the ideal light conditions for potted lilies by using LED lighting and optimizing the greenhouse and microclimate.

Solution

To accurately identify changes in the environment, it is crucial to collect and interpret greenhouse data and adjust the climate control systems accordingly. The aim of the experiment was to optimize the lighting strategy and minimize energy waste during the cultivation process.

Ledgnd came up with a specially composed set of sensors to measure leaf temperature, light levels, CO2 levels, and soil moisture. All data was collected in MyLedgnd and analyzed by a plant physiologist. Thanks to this information, Van Schie was able to recognize stress moments in plants and adjust strategies for better planning.

Results

By connecting the wireless sensors to the climate computer, they were able to automatically control the screens and adjust the light levels. With smart software, they even simulated a gradual sunrise, which gave the plants a significant boost. The lilies appeared to have greener leaves, larger buds, and stronger flowers. By combining LED lighting with smart screen strategies and advanced technology, Van Schie was able to achieve more efficient cultivation with less energy consumption. By extending the day by one hour, Van Schie realized a 15% shorter cultivation time. LED lighting also emits much less radiant heat, and there was already a plan in place to compensate for the loss of two degrees. After the trial, it turned out that the plants responded just as well to the two-degree temperature loss with two screens closed and good air circulation.

We recently discovered that if we give the plant too much light at the end of the day, it can't make much use of it at that moment. In fact, it even causes stress for the plant, which affects it for days afterward. These are the kinds of insights you only gain when you start working with data.
