LED is the new standard, here’s how to get it right
The decision has more or less been made: LED lighting is now the new standard in greenhouse horticulture. Whether you’re switching over step by step or replacing your entire lighting system in one go, one thing is certain, sooner or later, you’ll have to make the move to LED. But how do you go about it the right way?
The benefits of LED technology are no longer a secret
Lower energy costs, longer lifespan, and precise light control, the advantages of LED lighting in greenhouse horticulture are clear. The question is no longer if you should invest, but when and how. Because while the technology has proven itself, the reality in every greenhouse is different.
Every greenhouse is unique and requires its own approach
Switching to LED is about more than just a technical replacement. How much light do you provide, and when? What impact does this have on your (micro)climate? And which light spectrum best supports your cultivation strategy? Your greenhouse structure, screen use, crop type, and market position all play a key role in finding the right solution.
Orientation starts with insight
Many growers start by requesting quotes, but in doing so, they skip a crucial step: gaining insight. Without a clear understanding of your greenhouse, your cultivation strategy, and your energy goals, any payback calculation is unreliable. That’s why it’s best to start with an independent lightning advice. It gives you insight into what’s technically and financially feasible, without having to engage with suppliers right away.
“I have the cultivation knowledge in-house, so I provided the specifications I believed were needed based on that expertise. Ledgnd translated those into the technical specifications for the fixtures. They then created a shortlist of potential suppliers, who each submitted an offer. As part of the process, they also developed a lighting plan, including a light distribution layout for the different sections of the greenhouse.”

Avoid costly mistakes by seeking expert advice
You’ll be dealing with many aspects you may have little or no experience with. That’s why it’s wise to bring in an independent (brand-neutral) advisor. LED lighting is never a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one grower might be far less effective for another. That’s why it’s crucial to first understand what the switch to LED means for your greenhouse, your crops, and your cultivation approach. We’re here to help.
Based on your greenhouse setup, crop strategy, and current market prices, we’ll provide a clear overview of:
-
What energy savings you can expect
-
The ROI on your investment
-
Relevant subsidies or financing options
Get independent advice
Switching to LED requires a holistic approach. More light isn’t always better, and a more expensive fixture isn’t necessarily the best choice. By asking the right questions upfront and consulting independent specialists, you can avoid disappointment later on.
Understanding before deciding
Are you considering whether to invest in LED lighting? Avoid costly mistakes by first understanding what is technically and financially possible in your greenhouse.
