Considering LED lighting? These are the pitfalls to avoid
You’ve done your research, explored subsidy options, and perhaps even requested a few quotes. But how can you be sure you won’t make costly mistakes? Purchasing LED lighting is one thing, but how do you ensure you truly reap the benefits, both literally and figuratively? In this blog, we’ll show you how to get the most out of your LED investment.
Ask the right questions
The brochures look polished, charts promising 20% higher yields, fixtures with futuristic names, and color spectrums said to deliver magical growth. But every greenhouse is different. What works for one grower might have the opposite effect in yours. That’s why any LED investment should start with asking the right questions.
Where the purchasing process often goes wrong
In practice, we often see LED lighting purchases go wrong due to a few critical missteps. That’s why it’s important to pay close attention to the following points:
Quotes are difficult to compare.
One supplier calculates per micromole, while another uses square meters. Before you know it, you’re comparing apples to oranges, making it nearly impossible to make the right decision.
The lighting plan doesn’t match your greenhouse.
Lighting plans often involve many adjustable parameters behind the scenes, ones that aren’t immediately visible on the surface. That’s why you should always request lighting plans based on the same set of specifications. And keep in mind: a lighting plan is rarely perfect the first time around. Factor that into your process. This helps reduce the risk of overlighting, which can lead to unnecessary energy use, and ultimately, reduced yield.
An overemphasis on the fixture itself, and not enough on how it’s actually used.
LED is about more than just hardware. How you control it, when you dim, when you supplement, and how it integrates into your overall cultivation strategy are the real drivers of return on investment.
It’s easy to overpay without even realizing it.
Prices can vary significantly between suppliers, and without solid market insight, it’s difficult to assess what’s truly reasonable. What appears to be a great deal may, in reality, be well above the market rate.
Pay close attention to warranty terms, delivery conditions, installation costs, and ongoing maintenance requirements.
What exactly is covered under the warranty, and for how long? What about annual maintenance or the replacement of parts? What happens if the fixtures are delivered late, is there a penalty clause? Do the lamps actually deliver the promised light output? These kinds of details are critically important and can make a significant difference in the total cost of ownership.
Additional provisions on warranties and delivery terms
In our experience, no less than 45% of installations are delivered late. That’s why it’s far from a luxury to have clear agreements in place. Our procurement advisors document all of these matters in black and white. Pricing, warranty conditions, and delivery terms are all thoroughly addressed during the negotiation phase.
We were completely lost in the variety of suppliers. We wanted to move towards LED, but one supplier offered a mix with a certain percentage of red, blue, and green light, while another took a completely different approach. Ledgnd gave me clear insight into the differences between suppliers. They also paid close attention to the fine print, uncovering additional guarantees and opportunities we otherwise would have missed.
