Video – Ledgnd Visits the KNMI

Weather conditions play a crucial role in the daily steering of the greenhouse. That is why the MyLedgnd data platform makes use of reliable weather data from the KNMI. But how is this information actually generated? To gain a better understanding, Ramón van de Vrie and Maarten van Bemmel visited the weather institute in De Bilt, where they spoke with climate expert Peter Siegmund.

MyLedgnd is Ledgnd’s data platform that clearly visualises and analyses (micro)climate data. This gives growers real-time insight into all key climate factors and how the crop responds to them. The platform was recently connected to the KNMI. KNMI weather data is imported and refreshed every five minutes, enabling accurate plant physiological calculations, for example related to light radiation. Based on these calculations, the greenhouse can be steered as optimally as possible. That makes the reliability of the data used essential. In the video, growers are given a behind-the-scenes look at the KNMI, while the conversation also provides valuable background on the weather data that is used for daily greenhouse steering.

Measuring and controlling

The KNMI provides independent knowledge, advice and warnings around the clock on risks related to weather, climate and seismology, says climate expert Peter Siegmund in the interview with Ramón van de Vrie of Ledgnd.

At the KNMI, a wide range of measurements is carried out to make weather forecasts as reliable as possible. Just like in greenhouse horticulture, the KNMI makes extensive use of sensors. In total, the institute operates thirty measurement stations. “We continuously innovate by testing new sensors,” Siegmund says. In addition, the KNMI constantly evaluates the accuracy of its forecasts. “This allows us to further improve our models.”

Data in MyLedgnd

Within MyLedgnd, the integration with the KNMI is directly available to all users: every five minutes, the latest weather data is automatically imported and enriched with plant physiological calculations.

Growers not only see what today’s conditions mean, but also how conditions are expected to develop tomorrow. “With parameters such as temperature, radiation, absolute and relative humidity, and cloud cover, MyLedgnd provides practical steering information to make timely adjustments and plan ahead for the next day,” says Ramón van de Vrie.
