Triology: The future of greenhouse horticulture – Part 1 market needs and solutions
In part 1 of this triology, Maarten van Bemmel explains how Ledgnd is responding to the demand for efficient LED technology in horticulture. He discusses the challenges faced by growers and how Ledgnd supports them with independent advice and education.
This triology delves into the innovative technologies that are transforming the greenhouse horticulture sector. It explores the challenges of implementing sustainable lighting solutions and how advanced technologies are helping growers optimize their greenhouses. Maarten van Bemmel, Product Owner of MyLedgnd, shares forward-thinking innovations and how these developments are empowering growers to make informed decisions.
Ledgnd has been actively engaged in recent years with the growing demand for efficient and effective LED technology in the greenhouse horticulture sector. On one hand, by providing lighting advice, and on the other, through the development of the data platform MyLedgnd. “Our data platform is designed to help growers with the implementation of LED lighting in greenhouses,” begins Maarten. “The market demands clarity and quality control, and that is exactly what we offer.”
The greenhouse horticulture sector faces the challenges
“Growers often struggle with understanding quotes for LED lighting,” says Maarten. “The terminology is often unclear, and comparing different offers is complex. We provide a brand-independent advisory role, helping growers identify the best options for their specific situation.” Ledgnd aims to create as much transparency in the market as possible. “For example, we advise on three different LED options for a specific greenhouse and let the grower make the final decision.”

Maarten during the GreenTech 2024 interview
“Ledgnd continuously monitors new developments in LED lighting and provides growers with insights into the quality and reliability of various products. “We not only help growers choose LED lamps but also help them understand the technology behind it,” explains Maarten. “This includes analyzing LED chips, warranties, and even assisting with subsidies from the EU or the Netherlands.”
Advisory and educational role in greenhouse horticulture
“Maarten emphasizes that Ledgnd not only has an advisory role but also an educational one. “We want growers to understand what they are buying and how to use it optimally. This means we help them interpret data and make informed decisions. Our plant physiologists play a crucial role in this by providing growers with in-depth insights into plant growth and health, which we facilitate through our data portal MyLedgnd.”
